Machar still under house arrest – wife
March 7th 2020 (Nyamilepedia) — South Sudan’s First Vice-President and main armed opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny is still under house arrest, his wife, Angelina Teny said.
Teny who is also the SPLM-IO Chairperson of Security and Defense said in an interview with the BBC that Machar was unable to travel even to his own constituency because he was still under arrest.
“He is not allowed to travel to any of the regional countries. Any country that nieghbors South Sudan. He cannot reside there. He can reside there only by permission but he cannot travel,” she said.
“He is not able to travel to his own constituency and talk to his people,” she added.
Teny further said the main armed opposition leader still have no South Sudanese passport tland that he has been travelling on an Ethiopian passport given by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed.
“As we speak now he doesn’t hold a South Sudanese passport. He’s been travelling on an Ethiopian passport under courtesy of His Excellency Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed because when he came from South Africa, there was nothing to travel with,” she said.
“His passport had been confiscated and torn,” she further added stressing that “It’s the right of any citizen to have a passport.”
