South Sudan’s Kiir forms committee to investigate Abyei attack

January 23rd 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan government on Thursday said it has formed a committee to investigate yesterday’s fatal attack by suspected Arab Miseriya.

Kiir’s office said in a statement that the government also condemns the attack which killed more than 30 people.

The announcement following a meeting between Kiir and the deputy chairman of Sudan’s Sovereignty Council Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Daglo this afternoon at the state house J1 in Juba.

“President Kiir and Mr. Hamdan discussed issues including the tragic incident in Abyei that claimed more than twenty lives, and left hundreds homeless,” the statement seen by Nyamilepedia partly read.

It further added that the meeting discussed “issues concerning the progress of the peace negotiations between the Sudanese government and armed movements.”

Presidential advisor on Security and Chairman of the National Pre-transitional Committee (NPTC) said the “government of South Sudan condemns the Abyei incident, and the President directed the formation of a fact finding committee to visit the area, and proposed a deployment of unified forces comprising of South Sudan Peoples Defense Forces and Sudan Armed Forces to Abyei.”

For his part, Gen. Hamdan also said he delivered a message from the chairperson of the Sovereign council Abdul Fatah El Burhan, “condemning the Abyei incident” adding that the culprits will be brought to book.
