January 6th 2020 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s ruling party, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM), has called on South Sudanese to rally behind President Salva Kiir in the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement.

Kiir, SPLM-IO leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny and several opposition groups, in September 2018 signed a revitalized version of a 2018 peace pact to end what became one of the deadliest civil wars in the continent which engulfed the country in 2013.

The agreement has seen setbacks over what the international community has said is lack of political will for its implementation from the rival leaders who had promised to end the war which has killed thousands and displaced millions.

On Monday, SPLM acting secretary-general Jemma Nunu Kuma met Kiir and briefed him on the activities of the party according to a statement issued by the South Sudan Presidential Press Unit.

“H.E President Salva Kiir Mayardit met with SPLM delegation headed by the acting Secretary General of the party Jemma Nunu Kumba at the State House on Monday,” the presidency said in a statement this afternoon.

Kumba told the government-ran South Sudan Broadcasting Corporation that she “briefed the President who is also the SPLM Chairman of the party on the plans and activities of the party as well as the mobilization of the people on the implementation of the revitalized peace deal.”

While reiterating the commitment of the SPLM to the implementation of the peace agreement, Kuma urged “the people of South Sudan to support President Kiir in the implementation of the peace agreement for peace and stability in South Sudan.”
