Kiir, Machar to engage holdout opposition groups – statement
December 18th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan President Salva Kiir Mayardit and main armed opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny agreed early this week to engage holdout opposition groups in a bid to bring them to the ongoing peace process.
Kiir and Machar have both been meeting in Juba for a week to try to resolve several issues affecting the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement the two men signed in September last year.
The 2018 agreement obliged them to form what would be the Reconstituted Transitional Government of National Unity (RTGoNU) to implement provisions of that agreement for a duration of 36 months.
In a statement on Monday, the SPLM-IO said Kiir and Machar have agreed to engage “non-signatories to the R-ARCSS in order to achieve comprehensive and lasting peace in South Sudan.”
