December 19th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – A top British diplomat has said he don’t know why South Sudan’s main armed opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar continue to be detained by the region despite being part of the peace process.

Machar, an important signatory of the revitalized peace agreement, has been under house arrest since collapse of a 2015 peace agreement in July 2016.

The international community has been calling on those detaining him in the region to release the main armed opposition leader because he has been a part of the ongoing peace process.

Speaking before the UN Security Council on Wednesday, Jonathan Allen, the British UN deputy representative, reiterated call for the region to release Machar who have helped bring calm to the country since signing a peace with President Salva Kiir over a year ago.

“We welcome the recent meetings and positive statements that have taken place between President Kiir and Dr Machar. But I have to say that so far we haven’t seen those shift the dial and I want to stress today the importance of actions and results, as well as statements and promises,” Allen said.

“I echo the need expressed by others to resolve the status of Dr Riek Machar. I just do not understand how he does not hold a South Sudanese passport while he’s busy negotiating to be part of the South Sudanese government. And I hope that this can be sorted out quickly as a gesture of good faith and that his status can be resolved by the region,” Allen added.
