Sentence against al-Bashir politically motivated – defense team
December 15th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – Yesterday’s sentence against Sudanese former President Omar Hassan Ahmed al-Bashir is politically motivated, the defense team of the long-time Sudanese leader said on Saturday.
A Khartoum court on Saturday convicted al-Bashir of corruption and illicit possession of foreign currency and sentenced him to two years of detention in a social reform facility.
The 75-year-old al-Bashir who seized power more than 30 years ago was ousted by the military in April this year following months of street protests against his three-decade rule.
The presiding judge said al-Bashir was being sent to a reform facility, rather than a prison, on account of his age.
Speaking to reporters following the verdict, Ahmed Ibrahim al-Tahir, head of al-Bashir’s defense team, said the ruling was politically motivated but said they have confidence in the Sudanese judiciary.
“The judge made the ruling based on political motives, but despite that, we still have confidence in the Sudanese judiciary,” al-Tahir said.
