December 7th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan peace monitors have said that implementation of pre-transitional tasks is far from complete weeks after the parties agreed to extend the pre-transitional period for 100 days.

The government and opposition groups signed a peace deal last year to end the war. It provides for the formation of a unity government but this would come after conditions set forth, which includes formation of unified army, are met.

The parties missed a May deadline and then extended for November 12th which has also been missed. The parties then agreed to extend for 100 days ending in February to allow for implementation of the outstanding issues.

As the time goes toward February, the Ceasefire and Transitional Security Arrangement and Verification Mechanism (CTSAMVM) said on Thursday that the implementation of the critical tasks is far from complete.

“Already three weeks have passed since the 100 days extension was agreed and many important tasks remain to be completed. CTSAMVM continues to monitor and verify the cantonment process, but this task remains far from complete and screening has not yet begun,” General Desta Abiche, the chairman of the peace monitoring body said

“Registration has stalled while the JMCC awaits the printing of additional registration forms. The lack of sufficient logistical support to cantonment sites especially food and medicine.”
