December 4th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan parties to the revitalized peace agreement who were meeting in Juba this week will meet again after ten days to revisit the issue of the number of states.

This came after the parties failed to agree on the number of states the country should have during the transitional period.

A consultative meeting of the parties to the conflict convened by the regional bloc, IGAD, was held in Juba from December 2 to December 4 in hope that the parties agree to resolve the dispute on the number of states.

The meeting was attended by the five signatories to the revitalized peace agreement with attendance of South Africa’s vice-president David Mabuza who is also South Africa’s special envoy for South Sudan. The IGAD special envoy organized the meeting.

Speaking to reporters on Wednesday following the three-day meeting in Juba, Mabuza said the parties will meet again in ten days to finalize the issue which has threatened to fail the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement the government signed with opposition groups last year.

“We are going to finalize the issue of the states and the boundaries in the next 10 days,” he said.

The Secretary-General of South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA) said they needed a win-win situation after the parties failed to reach a compromise on the number of states.

“We are likely to see between 10 and 32 states after what transpired during the meeting of the parties,” he remarked.
