December 2nd 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – Fighting has erupted between South Sudan army soldiers and armed civilians in the country’s capital Juba after residents rejected a government directive to vacate houses in the capital’s Sherikat neighborhood.

Sources said the fighting erupted when South Sudan army soldiers who were using AK-47, PKM and RPGs as well as hand propelled grenades fired at armed civilians who for their part threatened to shot at bulldozers should they continue the demolition process.

“The fighting started yesterday evening and continued to this morning,” one source told the Nyamilepedia from Juba.

Sherikat is a neighborhood in Juba that is located south of the city along the Juba-Nimule high-way. It is not well surveyed and so is considered a slum.

“The people responded, by saying they do have no place to go to and they should have been told of the demolition in advance,” an unnamed eyewitness was quoted by the Eye Radio this afternoon.
