Machar travels to Addis Ababa for regional leaders’ summit
November 27th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s main armed opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny has traveled this evening to the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa where he is expected to attend a IGAD summit of the heads of state and government due for Friday, an opposition spokesman allied to him said.
The IGAD summit is expected to deliberate on several issues including the status of the main armed opposition leader who has been under what the SPLM-IO said has been an illegal detention since the collapse of a 2015 peace agreement in July 2016.
“The SPLM/SPLA (IO) would like to inform members and the public at large that, the Chairman and Commander in Chief of the People’s Movement SPLM/SPLA (IO), H.E. Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon and his accompanying delegation left the Sudanese capital, Khartoum for Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, this evening at about 6:00 PM, for the Ordinary Summit of IGAD Heads of State and Government scheduled on November 29th, 2019,” the statement issued by SPLM-IO director of information Puok Both Baluang this evening partly read.
“We are expecting the determination of the status of H.E. Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon from his house arrest and lifting of the restrictions imposed upon him since August 2016,” he added.
IGAD Council of Ministers have several times called on the regional heads of state and government to meet so that Machar’s decision is deliberated upon, something which has been the demand of world powers including the United States.
