November 26th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan parliament speaker Anthony Lino Makana has been suspended temporarily by lawmakers who sought to impeach him.

Last week, lawmakers told Makana to resign to avoid what they said was a possible impeachment over corruption practices decried by the South Sudanese parliamentarians.

Makana in a sitting conducted by members of the ruling SPLM caucus in parliament rejected the advice saying he won’t do so unless President Salva Kiir Mayardit who doubles as the SPLM chairman asked him to do so.

“Speaker Anthony Lino Makana has been asked not to work until the issue is resolved, so his deputy is the one managing the parliament,” Dhoruai Mabor Teny who represents Rumbek East County told Radio Tamazuj.

“The office of the speaker is now closed and we are now waiting for the SPLM caucus to hold its meeting next week.  Makana is no longer our speaker,” he added.

Paul Yoane Bonju, the head of the parliamentary committee for information said: “The speaker’s fate will be decided by the SPLM caucus, and the acting chief whip Ngong Deng is the one responsible now.”
