NSS arrests teacher in Western Lakes state
November 15th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s National Security Service arrested on Tuesday a teacher in the country’s Western Lakes state, a civil society member who condemned the arrest said in a statement extended to Nyamilepedia.
“On behave of the Civil Society Organizations’ Network (CiSON) Lakes State-Rumbek, I do hereby strongly condemning the manhandling and arrest of Ustaz Gabriel Kuc Abiei this morning the 12th November 2019 at 9:00Am by orders of the President of high Court Judge Micheal Atem,” the statement by the civil society in Lakes state said.
The statement said the teacher was arrested as “a result of the follow up case on the IMPACT Primary Schools Teachers’ incentives allegedly diverted by the former government of JOHN DENG MAMER with his deputy.”
“In reference to the commitment from the Hon. Governor Mahmud Solomon in a letter dated 2nd –May 2019 of which the Hon. Governor stressed his commitment to refund the money on installments basis.
“It is important that we distinguish public rights from individual rights that would help our democracy to grow in a just and lawful society where justice are not abused and denied. We urge the state government and the judiciary to respect the rights of the professional bodies such as teachers of which Ustaz Gabriel Kuc Abiei is representing in the court of law.
“Therefore, on behave of Civil Society Network in Lakes State, I call on the government for the immediate release of TEACHERS’ representative to continue with case till we have the final hearing on the matter as a greatest expectations by the community of which the teachers serve their children.”
