November 14th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s former army chief Gen. Paul Malong Awan is reportedly in talk with opposition groups which are not part of the revitalized peace agreement.

An opposition official said Malong who leads the South Sudan United Front/Army (SSUF/A) has met several opposition representatives in the Kenyan capital Nairobi in a possible move to united the holdout opposition rank.

“He met some on them and he is in talk with another group which I will not mention too,” a source in Nairobi told the Nyamilepedia on Thursday.

South Sudan government and opposition groups signed a revitalized peace agreement in September last year to end the war. Malong is not a signatory to the agreement.

He accused in the past President Salva Kiir Mayardit of hindering his plan to join the IGAD-led peace process. Kiir sought in the past to reconcile with Malong who for his part demanded that certain pre-conditions be met before he could return to Juba.

This includes assurance for his safety and the possible return to a senior government position.
