IGAD urges parties to expedite peace implementation after extension

November 10th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) which mediated the 2018 peace agreement has urged South Sudan parties to expedite the implementation of the critical pre-transitional tasks during the 100-day period.

President Salva Kiir Mayardit and main armed opposition leader Dr Riek Machar on Thursday agreed to extend the pre-transitional period for 100 days within which the pre-transitional period outstanding issues should be implemented.

In a meeting conducted in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa on Saturday, the IGAD Council of Ministers urged the parties to expedite the implementation of the pre-transitional tasks and to hold consultative meetings in Juba to follow up on the implementation of the agreement.

South Sudan parties to the Revitalized Agreement of Resolution of the Conflict on South Sudan (R-ARCSS) convened a meeting in Addis Ababa on Saturday to discuss the implementation of the 2018 peace agreement. The meeting endorsed the extension of the pre-transitional period for three months.

During the meeting, South Sudan parties reviewed reports from the agreement mechanisms consisting of the Reconstituted Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission (R-JMEC), National Pre-transitional Committee (NPTC), the Ceasefire & Transitional Security Arrangements Monitoring & Verification Mechanism (CTSAMVM), National Constitutional Amendment Committee (NCAC), Joint Defence Board (JDB), Strategic Defence and Security Review Board (SDSR-B), Joint Military Ceasefire Commission (JMCC).
