Nuer community, advocacy group condemns Maiwut violence

August 6th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The Nuer Community in the United States of America and a civil society organization have both condemned ongoing fighting between SPLA-IO and armed civilians in Maiwut.

Since last week, fierce fighting have been reported in areas around Maiwut town between local youth and forces of the main armed opposition group led by the South Sudan’s First Vice-President designate Dr. Riek Machar.

We as the Nuer community of the US condemn the incident that took place in Adar state,” the Nuer community in the US said in a statement extended to Nyamilepedia on Monday.

The group said they were disappointed and shocked at the fighting in Maiwut condemning the governor and other SPLA-IO commanders in the area.

We condemn the Governor Stephen Pal’s actions. In addition, we condemn the actions of the commanders, Khor Choul and Ochan Puot, over the administration of military in Adar state,” the organization said in a statement.

A civil society group also condemned the violence urging the parties to exercise restrain to avoid further civilian casualties and displacement.
