Governors of Eastern Lakes, Jonglei meets in Aweirial over land dispute

August 4th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – Two South Sudanese governors are meeting in Eastern Lakes’ Aweirial county to discuss a land dispute which led to fighting in March this year, a spokesman for Eastern Lakes governor said.

Early this year, fighting broke out between Gok community in Malek county of Eastern Lakes and Twic country of Jonglei state over a dispute about the ownership of Jorwach area.

Jorwach is a swampy area historically belonging to Eastern Lakes’ Malek County and it is located near the border with neighboring Jonglei state.

Speaking to Nyamilepedia on Sunday, a spokesman for the governor of Eastern Lakes state said governor Mangar Buong is expected to discuss with his Jonglei state counterpart Maker Thiong Maal the land dispute in the meeting which will go on for two or three days.

He said a delegation led by governor Buong had already arrived at the venue of the conference in Aweirial south county.

“…. accompanying the Governor are Hon. Simon Adok Tueny, Minister of Local Government and Law enforcement agencies and Hon. Marial Awuok Til, Minister of Information, Culture, Youth and Sports, ELS, Yirol,” Puorchien Matueny, the Press Secretary for governor Mangar Buong said.

The conference is being funded by UNDP,” he added.
