July 30th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – Theft among South Sudan’s traffic police is on the rise in the country’s capital Juba, several motorist who spoke to Nyamilepedia this week said.
One South Sudanese citizen said in an exclusive interview that he has been forced several times to pay between 2000-7000 South Sudanese Pound (SSP) by the traffic police on what he said were false claims of not driving in accordant with the traffic laws.
“For the last four months, I have been asked to pay between 2000 and 7000 SSP by the traffic police in several occasions as find after they accused me that I have been driving against the police laws,” a motorist who said he drives every morning to Juba town told the Nyamilepedia on condition of anonymity.
“Because I have a car, they think that I have a lot of money to pay them and this is very unfortunate that police do not know what is going on in the country today,” he added.
In recent days, traffic police have intensified crackdown on tinted cars despite a ruling by South Sudan’s parliament that the measure was unlawful.
Interior minister Michael Chiangjiek Gaey last month said several police officers have been dismissed after they were court robing citizens while providing fake residential permits to foreigners.
