July 17th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), a regional bloc which brokered a peace agreement between South Sudan government and opposition groups last year, is mediating between rival groups of South Sudan Opposition Alliance, they newly elected leader of the opposition consortium said.

Early this month, Gabriel Changson, former chairman of the alliance who is also the leader of the Federal Democratic Party (FDP), said in a statement that Denay Chagor, the leader of SSUM/A, will lead the alliance for six months before handing back to him for another six months.

The statement angered six opposition leaders that make up the eight-member opposition consortium forcing them to issue a joint statement asking Changson to revoke the statement within 24 hours.

Following a failure by Changson and Chagor to backtrack on the statement, the six leaders decided to elect Josephine Lagu for a six-month term.

Last week, the six leaders issued another statement through its spokesman Dr. Lam Akol Ajawin who is also the Secretary-General asking Changson and Chagor to explain – in writing – why they continued to use the name and logo of the alliance within 48 hours.

In a statement on Wednesday, Lagu told the Nyamilepedia that the regional bloc is mediating between them and the two groups and that initial plans to take measures against the two were brought to a standstill until efforts to mediate are exhausted.
