July 16th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) and the African Union (AU) have been urged to enforce South Sudan arms embargo imposed by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) last year.

The Global Centre for the Responsibility to Protect (GCR2P), an international advocacy firm, said in a report that regional community, particularly the African Union should assist in monitoring the arms embargo.

“Pending the full implementation of the R-ARCSS, the AU, IGAD and neighboring countries should actively assist in imposing and monitoring the arms embargo,” the report partly said.

“As the army continues to clash with the NAS and other armed groups outside of the peace agreement, it must strictly adhere to IHL and IHRL. The SPLA, SPLA-IO and all affiliated militias must ensure that UNMISS is able to move freely and without threats to its personnel,” the report added.

The global firm was established by the United Nations nine 12 years ago to help in promoting the universality of human rights and protecting the world populations from genocide, war crimes, ethnic cleansing and crimes against humanity.
