July 1, 2019(Nyamilepedia) — In the context of growing concerns about insecurity and scarcity of food, the United Nations Refugee Agency (UNHCR) and its implementing partners have in recent days conducted a joint risk assessment in Panyume, Morobo County and documented high levels of insecurity, food shortages, lack of access to quality education, inadequate healthcare and recruitment of children by armed forces.
In a statement extended to the Nyamilepedia on Friday, the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) confirmed that in light of this dire situation, the humanitarian actors will respond in a timely manner to the documented situation and provide life-saving assistance to the affected population.
“UNHCR leads an assessment mission to Morobo County: In Yei, UNHCR in collaboration with South Sudan’s Commission for Refugee Affairs (CRA), United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR), and UNOCHA undertook a mission to Panyume, Morobo County area to assess the caseload of asylum seekers who became isolated during the outbreak of conflict in 2016.”
And noted that “the major protection concerns identified include insecurity, access to education, recruitment of children by armed forces, SGBV, access to healthcare, water, and food” according to the report sent by UNHCR’s representative Mr. Richard Ruati.
Despite the sharp decline in clashes between the South Sudanese armed forces, issues related to food and insecurity have pushed families into worse conditions, leaving them without any means of livelihood.
South Sudan Parties are under intense pressure from the international community over the slow pace of the implementation of the revitalized peace deal.
In last two days, the Special Representative of the UN Sectretary-General, Mr. David Shearer, during a briefing at the UNSC, expressed concern over the slow pace in which agreement is being implemented, saying the recent extension of Pre-transitional period could derail the ongoing peace deal.
