June 25th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – A South Sudanese girl living in Kakuma Refugee Camp has been enrolled in a prestigious Pupils Reward scheme (PURES) programme as a token of appreciation for being one of the top performing students in the KCPE-2018 Kenya Primary School Certificate.

Juk Mabior Kuai passed the 2018 KCPE exams with flying colors, making her the second best student in Turkana County. Despite being one of the unfortunate school-going children who had to flee civil war in South Sudan, Juk scored a total of 418 points out of the possible 500 marks in the 2018 Kenya Primary School certificate.

The Pupils Reward Scheme (PURES) is a mentorship project launched by Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta and the First Lady, Margaret Kenyatta, and is geared towards motivating the best performing students to work hard and achieve their dreams while continuing their studies.

In a brief statement seen by the Nyamilepedia, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) commended the efforts made by the Kenyan Government in providing equal opportunities for both refugees and the host community and also thanked the South Sudanese girl for her outstanding performance and also for making the best out her unspeakable suffering in the Camp.

South Sudan faces a crippling humanitarian crisis that deprives thousands of school-age children of their education.

Last year, the UNESCO Institute for Statistics, projected that, an estimated number of 2.2 million children in South Sudan do not receive an education – ‘representing one of the highest rates of out-of-school children in the world’.
