June 24th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – British peacekeepers deployed to South Sudan as part of a UN mission are training internally displaced women in the country’s Upper Nile state capital Malakal on how to protect themselves against prevailing sexual violence against women in the world’s youngest nation.

The training, a British official said, is geared towards helping South Sudanese women, especially those internally displaced in Malakal, to identify potential risks to their personal safety and protect themselves against external threats such as sexual assaults in conflict zones.

Sexual violence is now used as a weapon of war and the consequences of it perpetuate conflict. Defense forces must be equipped to help end sexual violence in conflict,” British defense secretary, Penny Mordaunt said in a statement.

I am proud our Armed Forces can help protect and empower women and other vulnerable groups across the globe. From self-defense workshops to training other militaries on gender rights our personnel bring their professionalism and expertise to help end this terrible practice,” Mordaunt added.
