June 23rd 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The Ethiopian government announced on Sunday that the country’s army chief has been wounded after he was allegedly short in a regional coup attempt that occurred during the evening hours of Saturday.

There were reports that Gen. Seare Mekonnen, the army chief, succumbed into wounds in early hours of Sunday but a Nyamilepedia correspondent reporting from Addis Ababa said he could not confirm whether the reports were true.

The coup attempt, according to the office of the Prime Minister, took place in the regional state of Amhara, one of the nine federal regions of the Horn of Africa nation.

In a statement following the attack, the office of the premier said the coup contradict the country’s constitution and tantamount to violations of the Ethiopia’s democratic values vowing to prosecute the culprits and bring them to justice.

“The coup attempt in Amhara regional state is against the constitution and is intended to scupper the hard-won peace of the region,” the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.

“This illegal attempt should be condemned by all Ethiopians and the federal government has full capacity to overpower this armed group,” the statement added.
