June 12th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – Secret talks reportedly taking place between the government of South Sudan and the rebel movement, South Sudan United Front (SSUF/A), led by former army chief, General Paul Malong Awan, have collapsed following a request by Malong to reopen the agreement for renegotiation, a government official at South Sudan embassy in Nairobi told the Nyamilepedia on Tuesday.

The diplomat who declined to be named said Malong sought to renegotiate the agreement with government especially the chapter one of the revitalized peace agreement which deals with the revitalized unity government and gives all parties to the agreement portfolios.

The government official didn’t however mention if Malong wanted to be granted a Vice-President position but there has been rumors that the government in Juba plans to offer General Malong such a senior position.

He (Malong) wanted the government to renegotiate with him alone the agreement. He want Chapter [of the agreement] to be reopened up for discussion again after it has been signed in September with out rebels,” the government official said.

It is on this basis that the government delegation was directed to halt any talks with Malong until the government employ another strategy to get everyone included in the revitalized peace agreement and to the capital Juba,” the official added.

South Sudan government signed a revitalized version of a 2015 peace agreement with rebel groups in September 2018 in a bid to end the ongoing civil war. Malong is not a part of the agreement because he was prevented participation by the regional body, the IGAD , from doing so in early 2018 according to him.
