June 4th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan government has accused the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) of renewing the sanctions and arms embargo based on false information.

The United Nations Security Council last week voted to extend a sanction regime and a one-year-old arms embargo for another year.

Ten members of the council including the US voted in favor of the resolution despite resistance from Equatorial Guinea, Ivory Coast, South Africa, Russia and China.

The country’s information minister, Michael Makuei said in an interview with the Eye Radio that the government has ceased buying arms several years back and he wonders why the UN would renew sanctions based on false information that the government continues to buy arms.

“It’s not acceptable because all these reports [suggest] that the government is buying weapons to kill its citizens are just cut and paste and made to appear as new things all together,” Makuei said.

“To us, it’s not the right time for renewal because we are in the process of implementing the revitalized peace agreement which we reached with the opposition parties accept with those of Thomas Cirilo and Paul Malong,” Makuei added.
