May 15th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – A South Sudan armed opposition group has named a successor one month after its leader and founder died.
The South Sudan United Movement and Army (SSUM/A)’s leader, General Peter Gatdet Yaka, died in the Sudanese capital Khartoum last month after suffering heart attack.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the SSUM leadership meeting in Khartoum decided to appoint Gatdet’s deputy, General Denay Jock Chagor, to succeed him temporary until a new leader is elected.
“The Leadership Council of South Sudan United Movement/South Sudan United Army Forces in a meeting held early this morning in Khartoum has resolved that Mr Denay Jock Chagor shall run the office as the Acting Chairman and C in C of the Movement for the next three months until the Chairman is elected and this shall come to effect from the day of its signature,” said the statement seen by the Nyamilepledia.
According to the statement, the decision to appointment him is in line with “article (38) of the Basic Rules and Regulations of SSUM/SSUAF 2015, which states that “in case of the position of the president fall vacant, the deputy President and C in C shall act temporarily as Movement’s President until a new President is elected to the movement within 45 days.”
