April 30th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The main armed opposition group, SPLM-IO, led by former First Vice-President Dr. Riek Machar Teny condemned on Tuesday plan by President Salva Kiir to form unity government in May.

Kiir and Machar, along other opposition leaders, signed a revitalized peace agreement in September 2019 to end the ongoing civil war.

The agreement established a pre-interim period of eight months which ends on May 12th or in less than two weeks from now.

While the opposition calls for extension of the pre-transitional period,  South Sudan’s Kiir insists on forming the unity government on May 12th.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the SPLM-IO Chairperson of National Committee for Information and Public Relations, Mabior Garang de Mabior said the ground hi p condemns the plan to go on even without proper arrangements.

“The SPLM/SPLA (In Opposition) strongly condemns the regime’s attempt to derail the peace process,” Mabior said in the statement over the plan to form the government on May 12th.

“As the public is aware, the regime has dragged their feet on the implementation of the security arrangements, with nothing much having been achieved so far,” he added.

Mabior further said “The security arrangements of the Agreement are paramount to the success of the rest of the Agreement because without proper security arrangements, we are talking about a negotiated surrender and not a negotiated settlement.”
