Fighting erupts between government and opposition troops near Congolese border

February 8th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – Fierce fighting erupted between government troops and holdout opposition troops near the Congolese border,  a spokesman for the opposition have said.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the official spokesman for the holdout National Salvation Front (NAS) led by Gen. Thomas Cirilo Swaka said they were attacked on Monday by the South Sudan army near the border with DRC.

The statement said it defeated the attacking forces and inflicted heavy loses on them.

“In the process the NAS gallant forces inflicted heavy causalities to the Mathiang Anyoor Miliia leaving them retreating to Kojiko in an absolute humiliation,” Suba Samuel Manase, NAS spokesman said in a statement extended to the Nyamilepedia.

The statement said however that the group is disturbed by government campaign of “terror” in which it continue to kill civilians in Yei River state.

“The most disturbing development is that, the regime militia are intensifying its campaign of terror against civilians in the villages around Yei and Morobo,” the statement said.

“These militia are trekking into villages looting civilians’ property and food staff, arresting youth and men, burning houses and causing massive displacement,” the statement added.

The statement further claimed that SPLA-IO troops attacked NAS position in Kajo-Keji but were later defeated.

“In Kajo-Keji, SPLM-IO forces for the second time attacked NAS base. The NAS command learnt of this planned attack and tactically decided to vacate the base, the IO forces out of desperation burnt down the base,” it said.

“On their way back, the IO forces fell into NAS ambush consequently, leaving them running in disarray,” it added.
