January 29th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The main armed opposition group, the SPLM-IO, led by the country’s former First Vice-President Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon who has now again been designated for the position said they will write to the IGAD over the issue of the constitutional amendment text they said was altered last week.

The opposition group which is also a member of the National Constitutional Amendment Committee (NCAC) said last week that a text originally agreed upon by the parties to the NCAC was altered just before it was presented to the Chairperson of the committee.

Speaking to the Nyamilepedia on Tuesday as a part of follow-up to the issue,  the SPLM-IO representative to the committee Oyet Nathaniel said the issue has not been resolved as the group had requested and said the only option available for the group is now to write and raise the issue to the guarantors of peace.

“It is still unresolved and now we are raising it to the guarantors of peace,” Nathaniel told the Nyamilepedia from Juba.

South Sudan government and opposition groups signed a revitalized version of a 2015 peace deal in September 2018 to end the five-year old brutal conflict.

The SPLM-IO, the South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA), the Former Detainees and political parties working from Juba are part of the deal and all together have representatives who constitutes the National Constitutional Amendment Committee (NCAC).
