UN peacekeeper shot dead two civilians in Juba

January 21st 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – A soldier belonging to the United Nation Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) has killed two South Sudanese civilians on Saturday according to a statement issued by the mission on Monday.

According to the statement issued this morning, the UNMISS said the incident occurred at its base in Durupi – along Juba-Yei road on Saturday evening.

Although the statement said it was working to establish the circumcistances on which the peacekeeper killed the two civilians, it remains unclear why the peacekeeper have done so.

The statement however did not disclosed the identity of the victims nor the soldier, but said the mission promptly informed the South Sudan National Police Service of the incident.

It  then convened a review team comprised of representatives from UNMISS force, police and security services to investigate into the matter.

The statement further said the mission “deeply regrets the loss of life and is providing support to the families of the two men who died.”
