January 10th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan President, Salva Kiir Mayardiit, met on Thursday with a delegation of the SPLM Former Detainees at his office in Juba to discuss the country’s ongoing peace process and reconciliation among the rival party leaders, the Presidency said in a statement seen by the Nyamilepedia.

SPLM Former Detainees last month decided to return to the capital Juba as part of peace efforts to try to implement the revitalized peace deal signed in September last year by President Kiir’s government and opposition groups in Addis Ababa.

“Members of Former Political Detainees today held talks with H.E. Salva Kiir Mayardit at the State House on the implementation of the Revitalized Peace Agreement,” the South Sudan Presidency announced in a statement issued on Thursday evening.

In the statement, the Presidential Press Unit (PPU) further said the delegation of the former detainees led by former minister of road and bridges, Gier Chuang Aluong, “impressed by the President’s efforts in spearheading the peace process and thanked him for steadfast leadership.”

Under regional and international pressure, South Sudan President, Salva Kiir and opposition leader, Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon along other opposition groups signed a revitalized version of a 2015 peace agreement designed to end the war.

The signing took place in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa following months of intense negotiations in the Sudanese capital Khartoum in a talks hosted by the Sudanese President Omar Al-Bashir where the parties only had August 5th to reach a preliminary deal before the final signing of the agreement on September.
