January 9th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The regional bloc, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) has reportedly requested South Sudan’s formed military chief turned rebel leader Gen. Paul Malong Awan to denounce rebellion and wait for elections, sources have claimed.

Malong, who is currently the leader of the South Sudan United Front (SSUF) is not a part of the revitalized peace agreement signed in September by President Kiir, opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar and other opposition figures.

The signing of the agreement in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa followed months of negotiations in the Sudanese capital Khartoum between delegates who then had August 5th to reach a preliminary deal.

Speaking to the Nyamilepedia on Tuesday from the Kenyan capital Nairobi, a senior aide to Malong said they were asked by the regional body, IGAD to wait for elections as government is not willing to accept them in the would-be transitional government.

“They said he should wait for elections. The reason they told us is that the government of President Salva Kiir Mayardiit is not willing to work with us and so the IGAD has got nothing to do to convince the government,” the source which refused to be named told the Nyamilepedia on Tuesday.

The sourced further said Malong made it clear to them that any interference by the region to try to determine who to participate in the South Sudan’s peace process will be condemned.

“Malong made it clear: all regional plans to determine who should be in the peace process will be condemned and will not be tolerated by the South Sudanese people,” he added.
