S. Sudanese civil society groups in Uganda forms coalition against hate speech

January 8th 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – A group of South Sudan civil society organizations (CSOs) in Uganda have established a coalition to fight hate speech among South Sudanese refugees seeking asylum in the neighboring Uganda.

The new coalition known as Dangerous Speech Network (DSN) is formed by the Youth Social Advocacy Team (YSAT), the Centre for Peace and Justice (CPJ), Youth Empowerment Foundation (YEF), Community Empowerment for Creative Innovative (CECI), Support Foundation Network (SUFONET) in a sitting conducted last week in Uganda.

The coalition chairperson, John Jal Dak. who is also the Executive Director of Youth Social Advocacy Team (YSAT) said “the network will work to develop modules that will be used to train refugees on hate speech mitigation and peace building.”

The statement extended to the Nyamilepledia further said one of the objective of the coalition is to create a hate speech-free atmosphere in the society and make sure that there is a peaceful co-existence between refugees themselves and teh host community.

“Our network will also address and raise awareness on use of social media and help South Sudanese refugees in Uganda to mitigate online hate speech on all online platform such as Facebook, Twitter and You Tube and instead use all this online platform to promote peace and peaceful co-existence and sent messages that are to bring communities together as live in peace and harmony,” the statement partly read.

According to the statement, hate and dangerous speech remain a prime cause of violence today among South Sudanese refugees in Uganda vowing to fight and stop it at all cost.
