UN Secretary-General Guteres says South Sudan peace agreement progressing

January 2nd 2019 (Nyamilepedia) – The United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres said on Monday that the South Sudan’s revitalized peace deal has brought progress in respect to South Sudan’s security.

South Sudan President, Salva Kiir Mayardiit and opposition leader, Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon in September signed a revitalized version of a 2015 peace agreement to end the five-year old brutal conflict in the country.

Speaking in a video message to mark the New Year, the United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres says the South Sudan peace deal signed in September brought progress to the South Sudan’s peace efforts.

“And the agreement between the parties to the conflict in South Sudan has revitalized chances for peace, bringing more progress in the past four months than in the previous four years,” he said in the new year message.

He reiterated the world body’s readiness and commitment in bringing together different countries and parties so as to achieve a world free of conflicts saying the UN will not give up on this principles.

“In 2019, the United Nations will continue to bring people together to build bridges and create space for solutions. We will keep up the pressure and we will never give up,” he said.

“As we begin this New Year, let’s resolve to confront threats, defend human dignity and build a better future together,” he added.
