December 20th, 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – Fighting has erupted between Sudanese security forces this afternoon in the El-Gadarif state capital El-Gadarif over fresh anti-government protests the state has witnessed for almost a week now over rising living conditions and deteriorating economic situation.

Several eyewitnesses told the Nyamilepedia this afternoon that clashes erupted between the Sudanese army,  and elements of the National Intelligence and Security Service (NISS) after the later opened fire against protesters, something that led the army to return fire against NISS elements.

“The fighting started a few minutes ago between the National Security elements and those of the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF),” the eyewitness told the Nyamilepedia from El-Gadarif this afternoon.

Another witness said the fighting has ceased and the National Security elements who fired at the protesters have run away and the protester has continued their match that has closed major highways connecting the capital Khartoum and Port Sudan.

“They (security elements) ran away after the army fired against them and now the protesters are continuing their activities blocking highways that are connecting Khartoum and Port Sudan,” she added.

The witness added that she is not sure of what will happen next following the clash between the security service and the army.

On Wednesday,  angry protesters set ablaze the building of the state secretariat of the ruling National Congress party in Atbara.

Protests have also spread to other parts of Sudan chanting anti-government slogans.
