Malong, IGAD special envoy discuss revitalized peace deal

December 19th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – The IGAD special envoy for South Sudan, Amb. Ismail Wais on Tuesday met in the Kenyan capital Nairobi the former South Sudan army chief turned rebel leader, Gen. Paul Malong Awan and his group.

The meeting between Wais and Malong is a part of regional efforts spearheaded  by the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to try to convince non-signatories to the revitalized peace deal to join the ongoing peace process.

In a join statement issued on Tuesday, the IGAD special envoy announced that they have met Malong and his team in the Kenyan capital Nairobi over the South Sudan peace process on Tuesday.

“Pursuant to the IGAD Council of Ministers Resolution of 16th November 2018 directing the Special Envoy to engage the non-signatory parties to the R-ARCSS, the Special Envoy met the Chairman Of The South Sudan United Front/Army Gen. Paul Malong and his team in Nairobi on the 18th Dec. 2018,” said the statement jointly signed by Wais and Malong himself.

According to the join statement, Malong has appealed to the signatories of the revitalized peace deal to make modalities in order to allow the non-signatories like Malong’s SSUM/A to join in the peace process.

“[The SSUM/A] …… Calls upon the parties to R-ARCSS to make modalities to allow the non-parties thereof especially the SSUF/A, to participate in and actively engage in the peace process in South Sudan South Sudan, and to actively engaging in building the future of South Sudan,” the statement partly said.

It added that the South Sudan United Front Movement/Army “underscores their commitment to pursue non-violent resolution to the conflict in Southern Sudan and calls upon all parties to adopt the non-violent approach resolution to the conflict.”
