Machar-led armed opposition urges government to cease attacking them
October 9th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – The Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in Opposition (SPLM-IO) led by the country’s former First Vice President and now once again the First Vice President, Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon have called on the South Sudan government to respect the permanent ceasefire and cease attacking its forces in different parts of the country.
South Sudan President, Salva Kiir Mayardiit, and rebel leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny in late June signed a permanent ceasefire agreement in the Sudanese capital Khartoum to stop fighting as the parties were preparing to sign a final revitalized peace deal finally inked on September 12th in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa.
In a blow to the ceasefire agreement and the final peace deal, both troops continued to fight in some part of the country especially in Central Equatoria region and some part of Unity State in northern part of the country.
In an exclusive interview with the Nyamilepedia, the SPLM-IO director of the national committee for information and public relations Puok Both Baluang said they urges the government to cease fighting them in implementation of the agreement signed in June.
“We further call upon the government of Juba to cease attacking our positions countrywide in line with article 2.1.10 and all sub-articles to refrain from all prohibited actions and complying with all obligations outlined in CoHA of 2017,” Baluang told the Nyamilepedia.
In December 2017, South Sudanese parties signed a ceasefire agreement in Ethiopia ahead of the launch of the high-level revitalization forum designed to revitalize the August 2015 agreement.
