Kiir, Machar awarded with medal of honor for commitment to peace
September 22nd 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan President, Salva Kiir Mayardiit and opposition leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon were on Friday night awarded a peace medal by the Sudanese President Omar Hassan Ahmed Al-Bashir, the SPLM-IO said in a statement extended to the Nyamilepedia.
South Sudan President, Salva Kiir Mayardiit and his arch-rival turned peace partner, Dr. Riek Machar signed the long awaited revitalized peace deal in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa to end the five-year old brutal conflict.
According to the SPLM-IO statement, President Salva Kiir and SPLM-IO leader Dr. Riek Machar, both of whom are in Khartoum, we’re awarded the medal of honor for their commitment to peace in South Sudan during the celebrations at the Sudanese Presidency to mark the signing of the last week’s agreement.
“On a related level, H.E. Salva Kiir Mayardit, President of the Republic of South Sudan and H.E. Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon, Chairman and Commander in Chief of the SPLM/SPLA (IO) were Both awarded with the Medal of Honor and Order of the Republic, First Class (Sudan) respectively, presented by H.E. Field Marshal. Omar Hassan Ahmed Al Bashir, President of Republic of the Sudan during an official ceremony organized by the Sudanese Government on Friday September 21, 2018 at the Republican Palace in Khartoum, Sudan, which was also attended by Representatives of SSOA and OPP, on the occasion of the signing of the Revitalized Agreement on the Resolution of Conflict in the Republic of South Sudan (R-ARCSS) in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on September 12, 2018,” the statement seen by the Nyamilepedia partly read.
The SPLM-IO in the statement reiterated it’s commitment to peace in the Republic of South Sudan.
“The SPLM/SPLA (IO) reiterates its full commitment to the recently Revitalized Agreement (R-ARCSS) in terms and spirit, continue to respect it and do anything reasonably possible towards this end,” it said.
