September 8th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan’s Inspector General of Police Gen. Majak Akech has ordered the closure of illegal checkpoints connect the capital Juba to different cities as well as Hugh ways connecting the country to the neighboring Kenya and Uganda.

Currently, there is thousands of illegal checkpoints across the country hindering access to remote areas and important towns affecting as well the humanitarian access.

In a brief statement seen by the Nyamilepedia on Saturday, The Police Chief instructed law enforcement agents and States Police Commissioners to implement the orders with immediate effect.

“Inspector General of Police Gen. Majak Akech Malok and Deputy Inspector General of Police James Pui Yak Directed all organize forces and states Police commissioners to remove all check points more especially from Juba to Aweil and Juba to Nimule in order to allow free movement of traders with immediate effect,” the statement said.

The new order, if implemented, will allow free movements of traders and passengers between Juba and Kampala roads and enhance free movements within the country.

The presence of unauthorised checkpoints has increased illegal acts, including extortion of money from the traders and passengers. It has also contributed to insecurity hence prevents goods from being exported from neighbouring countries.

In recent months, a group of truck drivers operating between the Juba-Numeli highway went on a strike, demanding the South Sudanese Government to shun overtaxation at major roadblocks.

The ongoing civil war in the country, has gone to a context whereby the security forces go for months without salaries, this has contributed to insecurity and illegal activities being practiced by members of the security forces.
