Opposition Alliance condemn government term extension

July 16th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – The South Sudan Opposition Alliance (SSOA), an umbrella of nine South Sudan armed groups fighting the government of Gen. Salva Kiir, has condemned the government term extension by the South Sudan Parliament.

Last week, South Sudan parliament extended its term and that of the government of President Salva Kiir whose term expires in August 2018 according to the ARCISS which was broken in July 2016.

In a statement issued on Friday and seen by the Nyamilepedia, the opposition Alliance said they condemn the extension of a term for a government that instigated an ethnic war in December 2013.

“On the 22nd of May 2018, SSOA issued a press statement alerting the public to the feverish moves by the regime in Juba to extend its mandate while scuttling the peace talks now has been in the process, and with dismay, SSOA has learned Juba regime Transitional Assembly have unconstitutionally agreed to extend the terms of the Presidency and the legislative assembly to 2021 contrary 2015 ARCISS,” the statement signed by the group’s spokesperson, Kwaje Lasu,  said.

The statement urged the friends and people of South Sudan to reject what it referred to as the move by the regime.

“We call upon the masses of our people and the friends of South Sudan to reject this move by the Juba regime to extend its mandate. We must unite all our efforts to bring pressure to bear on the regime so that they stop this diversionary move and concentrate minds on the peace process now underway. Legitimacy can only come from the people not from an institution which lacks authority to grant legitimacy,” he statemented further said.
