July 14th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan said on Friday that it is committed to achieving peace in the young African nation despite a UN arms embargo imposed by the Security Council on Friday.
The UN Security Council on Friday voted in favor of a US-draft resolution calling for sanctions and arms embargo on the world’s youngest nation nearly five years since sliding into a bloody civil war that has killed hundreds of thousands and displaced millions.
During a speech to the United Nations Security Council after the “unfortunate” vote, the country’s Ambassador to the United Nations said his country is committed to ending the bloodshed despite the UN arms ban.
“This resolution as you say will not help, we are still committed. We will seek peace within the region, within the IGAD, within the African Union and we hope that in the next few days, there will be more positive news in that regard,” he said.
Amb. Deng thanked the countries who abstained like Russia, China and the neighbouring Ethiopia for not betraying his troubled war-torn country.
“Again I want to thank those members who have absence and we look forward to better news coming from Khartoum and in South Sudan in the near future,” he said.
The ambassador described the arms embargo as a slap on the face of IGAD and Africa Union that are making efforts to help the parties achieve peace in South Sudan.
