July 14th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – The United Kingdom, one of the world powers currently providing troops for the United Nations’ Peacekeeping Mission in South Sudan, pledges to send another contingent of its troops to the war-ravaged South Sudan.

Hundreds of British soldiers are making final preparations ahead of a deployment to the East African country, which has been in a bloody civil war since December 2013 after the ruling party, SPLM, turned violent that year.

A contingent of around two hundred Royal troops from 36 Engineer Regiment will be working in support of Operation Trenton – the UK military’s contribution to its United Nations (UN) obligations.

The engineers will operate under a United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) mandate and their work will include the building of a UN hospital to care for 1,000 peacekeepers.

Troops will also be involved in trying to improve access to fresh water and providing technical support to other contributing nations.

It was announced last November that the UK was extending its deployment of Royal Engineers to South Sudan for an extra year, taking it up to April 2020.

In the past, 36 Engineer Regiment has deployed on UN peacekeeping missions in Cyprus but this is their first deployment to South Sudan.

The UK contribution to UNMISS includes medics from the Royal Air Force and infantry specialists from Alder-shot based 1st Battalion, the Grenadier Guards.
