Permanent ceasefire commences in South Sudan

June 30th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – The permanent ceasefire agreement signed by the South Sudanese President, Salva Kiir Mayrdiit, and prominent South Sudan opposition and SPLM-IO leader Dr. Riek Machar Teny-Dhurgon in the Sudanese capial Khartoum on Wednesday has commenced after a midnight Saturday schedule approached.

The ceasefire deal was expected to commence within 72 hours and based on this schedule, it has commenced about less than an hour ago South Sudan’s local time.

Kiir on Thursday declared the ceasefire and has ordered all his troops to remain in barracks and act in case of attacks only as mean of self-defense.

Machar, for his part, declared the permanent ceasefire and ordered forces to remain committed to the declaration that has been welcomed by the regional and the international community.
