May 4th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – South Sudan government spokesman and information minister Michael Makuei Lueth has said that it is an international and a global practice to conduct elections during war and or any other crisis.

Makuei was responding to comments by the United Nation’s Assistant Secretary General for Peace-keeping Operations, Bintou Keita, who warned the South Sudanese government over its plans which hinted at conducting elections after the end of the Transitional Government of National Unity (TGoNU).

“In the first place, it is not the international community that decides for us, we decide for ourselves,” Makuei stressed.

He added that as the government, and the South Sudan decided, elections will go with out asking any consent from the International Community.

“So if as the people and the government of South Sudan have decided to go for elections, we would do so.” he said pointing out that “it is a global practice to conduct elections during crisis.”

On Wednesday, the Assistant Secretary General for the United Nations Peace-keeping Operations, Bintou Keita, said that the world body urges the South Sudan government to reject any plan regarding the conducts of elections in the country before peace between various warring parties is achieved pointing out that the current political and economic situation in the country is not conducive for the conduct of a free and fair elections.

Her remarks followed comments attributed to senior South Sudan government officials – including the minister of information Michael Makuei Lueth – who said the government will conduct elections should the next round of the High-Level Revitalization Forum fail to bring peace to the country or collapse.
