Botswana Old Man Ill In South Sudan
April 30th, 2018(Nyamilepedia) — Former Botswana president and the current chairman of the Joint Monitoring and Evaluation Commission, Mr Festus Gontebanye Mogae, who was assigned to oversee implementation of South Sudan Peace Agreement that has now collapsed, is hospitalized.
According to reliable sources, the Motswana old man, has been sick for over a week and he has not been able to run his daily routines.
Last weekend, Mogae was expected to attend Mo Ibrahim Foundation forum in Kigali, Rwanda; however, Ibrahim regrets that the JMEC chairman could not attend his forum has he was sick in the hospital.
“Unfortunately, Festus Mogae, our board member, is unfortunately in the hospital, he couldn’t join us. We wish him a speedy recovery” Said Mo Ibrahim
Attempts to reach JMEC or his family to comment on his health condition were not returned.
The Botswana old man, who led his country for 10 years between 1998 to 2008, has been relatively stable in South Sudan in spite of his age and poor health conditions in South Sudan.
Over the past one year, however, JMEC has slowed down as no progress was being made but Mogae did not lose hopes.
Many observers including Mo Ibrahim and members of international communities have tried to persuade the Motswana politician to close down JMEC and return home to enjoy his retirement or find alternatives; however, Mogae had hopes that South Sudan’s embattled leadership could come to its senses and one day restore peace and stability in their war-torn nation.
“I told him, Festus you know, it is not working, why are you guys wasting your time, why don’t you find other ways” Mo Ibrahim hinted Mogae after the South Sudan Peace Agreement collapsed.
