April 16th 2018 (Nyamilepedia) – One person has been killed and four others wounded after government soldiers at Check point opened fire at internally displace persons (IDPS) reportedly after the victims were returning from lectures at University of Juba.

Sources told the Nyamilepedia this afternoon that the incident occurred at 12 pm this afternoon and added that four civilians are detained and whereabouts remains unknown.

“There was an incident that took place this afternoon. One person by the name Khor was shot dead while on return from lectures at Juba University. He was short and four others were wounded inside the camp by astray bullet.  Four people are still missing because they have never reached the camp but we have understood that they are detained by the army at the Checkpoint” the source said.

Another source also told the Nyamilpedia on the condition of anonymity that the United Nations Peace keepers are trying to get the body of the deceased to the PoC for burial.

“The UN peace keepers were trying to get the body of the deceased from Checkpoint where the incident occurred. But to my knowledge they are still to get the body in”  the source said.

Similar incidents has been on the rise against IDPs who have been under the protection of the UN mission in South Sudan since South Sudan, world’s youngest nation, slipped into civil war in December 2013 after the army, mostly Dinka, targeted members of the Nuer ethnic group in Juba sparking a widespread protest from the army specially among the Nuer members of the army leading to many Nuer generals boycotting the army and launching rebellion.

In March, IDPs in Bentiu camp accused the government of burning down their shops after one of the biggest market in the Bentiu PoC in Rubkona caught fire.

Nyamilepedia was not able to independently verify this.
