“Pursuant to the resolutions of the SPLM/A Political Bureau September 23, 2016 and SPLM(IO) Constitution, I, Riek Machar Teny Dhurgon, Chairman and Commander-in-Chief, SPLM/SPLA(IO), do hereby appoint Cde Amos Addison Mangie Bousumo as SPLM/SPLA(IO) Representative to Democratic Republic of Congo  with effect from January 8th 2017” Reads part of a statement signed by Dr. Riek Machar in Pretoria, South Africa.

In another appointment, Dr. Machar also assigned Cde. Mbiko Cepehas Barakati as the SPLMA(IO) Chapter Country Coordinator for the Democratic Republic of Congo with effect from January 8th, 2017.

The SPLM/SPLA in Opposition, which controls over one hundred thousand troops in the country, has over 700 soldiers in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The troops in DRC are part of SPLA(IO) soldiers who accompanied Machar and his leadership to Juba as part of the August 2015 peace agreement that was violated in July last year.

While some of the 1300 soldiers were killed in Juba’s four days of fighting, many others remained in Central and Western Equatoria where Machar stationed some senior commanders in charge of Sectors and Divisions in Equatoria fronts. Over one hundred others were transported from DRC to Khartoum and finally to Pagak, South Sudan.

Within the last two months, Dr. Machar has made over 30 new appointments and relieved most of the representatives and military governors whom he appointed during the first phase of the war.

In other reports, the fighting between the SPLA-IO and DR Lam’s NDM forces has subsided with heavy loses on NDM sides. While the senior commanders, who led the NDM, are all killed within the last one week, their forces who survived the three days fighting have surrendered and awaits reintegration into SPLA-IO
