One of them belongs to Tongpiny residential area and not to any criminal tribe, as claimed by the police earlier. Another accused is said to be absconding and hiding somewhere in New Site area claimed police.

Earlier, the police theory resolved around the crime being the hard work of the community of Mauna area, who according to Government ‘police to keep law and order’, became more active in the rainy season.

Addressing the press in the area yesterday, Joseph Makur –Police Officer entrusted with the investigating the case claimed the gang-raped victims had identified the two accused.

Violating court guidelines, the police claimed they produced father of the raped victim (minor) before the press to buttress his claim. Later, the victim’s father contradicted the police version saying the survivors did not identify the accused as it was too dark and the police were in hurry to leave.

Makur said some personal properties that include jeans and t-shirt, that belong to the victim, were recovered from Zacharia. He said the police had conclusive proof against the accused and it would be produced in court at the appropriate time.

On the intervening night of May 30 -31, more than five armed officers blocked the Mauna – Custom Road nearby ABMC company main gate and stopped a taxi with passengers in it. They tied the men and gang-raped the minor girl and her 32-year-old mother.
