Opposition Leader Seeks Medical Attention After 40 Days In The Bush
August 18, 2016(Nyamilepedia) ——- South Sudan’s armed opposition leader, Dr. Riek Machar Teny, the Chairman and C-in-C of SPLM/A-IO is seeking medical support after 40 days of being pursued by his arch rival forces in Equatorian region.
Although Machar’s whereabouts remains a riddle, officials like Mabior Garang de Mabiror, who have direct contacts with him, assure that Machar is alright but needs time to recuperate from deadly battles that forced him out of the country.
“We have been in communication with him for the last two days from when he crossed the border out of South Sudan. He is in a secure country. Because of diplomatic procedures, the friendly country which is helping us in his evacuation. It is still a sensitive time. So we don’t want to reveal exactly the country but he will traveling to one of the IGAD countries soon and he will hold a press conference” Mabior said

“His condition is very exhausted. As you can imagine after his house was attacked by forces loyal to individual generals in the government. He withdrew from Juba, he has been constantly on the run from this time until his forces were able to cross him across the border and he is now evacuated ” he said.
Mabior further reiterates that Machar had other responsibilities on his shoulders as the communities around his hiding areas also look upto to him.
“He is a people’s leader, and so he was among the civil population. The civil population protected him, not only his soldiers. Being from a different area of south Sudan, you are not from the same community as theirs, it is very easy for that community to give you up. So he was also doing political work among the civil population to try and normalize the situation” Said Mabior Garang de Mabior.
“He has been on the run and so the situation takes its toll and he is now seeking medical attention and then also to do some diplomatic work”. Mabior continued.
He went on to explain that Machar is now needed to steer the wheel for the SPLM/SPLA-IO and reverse what President Salva Kiir and his ally, Taban Deng Gai, are currently doing in Juba.
Mabior said what exists in Juba today is not a Transitional Government of National Unity but a faction of President Salva Kiir trying to run the country on its own.
Many SPLM/A-IO politicians have been displaced into UN camps or other hiding places in and outside the capital.
Mabior repeats that a handful politicians, who are led by Taban Deng Gai in Juba, do not represent the armed opposition.
In other reports, sources from the United Nations in New York revealed that the UN participated in airlifting Dr. Machar at the request of the DR Congo authorities after his troops helped him crossed the border into DRC.
It is yet to be determined whether Machar is seeking medical attention in Kinshasa or in any other neighboring state’s capital.
The authority in DRC has denied any knowledge of Machar’s presence in the country.
