SSHURSA urges international community to stop China fueling war in South Sudan and calls upon South Sudan government to refrain from selling the future

SSHURSA

August 11, 2016(Nyamilepedia) ——-The South Sudan Human Rights Society for Advocacy(SSHURSA) condemns the intention of the government of South Sudan to borrow more foreign loans. Deng Alor Kuol, the South Sudan’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has been reported(http://www.theafricareport.com/East-Horn-Africa/south-sudan-seeking-19-bn-loan-from-china.html) that South Sudan is planning to borrow about $ 1.9 billion loan from China. So far these reports have not been refuted by Minister Alor and his silence seems to confirm the plan for the loans. Minister Alor has claimed that the loan would be used for infrastructure projects such as building roads and bridges.

SSHURSA refutes such a claim of Minister Alor as untrue. This is not the first time the government of South Sudan advances such claims. Since the year 2012(http://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-17883321), South Sudan has continued to borrow loans from China for the same projects but such projects never materialised. The money has always ended up in the pockets of government officials, leaving poor in abject needs for basic necessities. Besides, in future, these loans being borrowed are to be paid back by South Sudan from its public money.

This endangers the dwindling economy which will continue to affect the current and many South Sudanese generations to come. By borrowing loans for projects that are not implemented, risks selling future of South Sudan. Since 2013, South Sudan has been borrowing a number of foreign loans some of which are still not yet revealed but all these loans are used to enrich government officials and also for buying arms which end up killing South Sudanese. SSHURSA calls upon the government of South Sudan to stop selling the future of South Sudanese. The leaders must think of the next generations who will pay the price of refunding these loans. Any loans now given to the government of South Sudan by China or any other foreign governments are not for the benefits of South Sudanese but to be used for buying more weapons to perpetuate the violence. This leads to more sufferings and worsens the already deteriorated humanitarian crisis in the country.Share this with

SSHURSA strongly urges China to stop financing the war in South Sudan and instead, use its influence in the region and within the United Nations(UN), to ensure that a strong regional force is immediately deployed in South Sudan, arms embargo is effected and the August 2015 Peace Agreement which the warring parties have signed is restored and fully implemented to rid South Sudan of perpetual violence.

SSHURSA urgently calls on international community to stop China and any other countries from financing and fueling the war in South Sudan. China as a member of UN must stop its double standards and instead, observes its international obligations to promote peace and security under UN Charter.

SSHURSA calls on all parties to abide by the Agreement as an option left to hold South Sudan together.

Signed: Executive Director, SSHURSA
